![]() The Trojans sent a very clear message in Year 1 of the Riley era: Daddy’s home. USC went 11-1 in its 12-game schedule before losing to Utah in Las Vegas. Utah lost twice by mid-October and needed an extraordinary collapse by Oregon against Oregon State in late November to make the Pac-12 title game. The Trojans were one win away from the College Football Playoff. USC had the best 12-game season of any Pac-12 team by far. Most college football commentators and publications had Utah winning the Pac-12, but while the Utes did indeed win the conference, they didn’t finish first in the standings. Plenty of 8-4 predictions existed, and 9-3 was the general consensus from surveying pundits in all corners of the country. Lots of people in the college football industry wondered if USC would win as many as nine games. Sure, Lincoln Riley is a top coach, but even he was going to have a really hard time handling the mess Clay Helton left behind in Los Angeles. Remember last summer? Doubts were flying about USC.
